What the study reports
The authors report experimental control of a vanadium-dioxide metasurface using two electrical channels. Each drives a separate phase-change island in the unit cell. The public abstract describes switching between positive, negative and zero circular dichroism, together with continuous adjustment of its strength. [1]
What this does not establish
Only the publisher abstract and bibliographic/affiliation information were accessible. Operating frequencies, switching times, energy consumption, cycling endurance and measurement uncertainties were not independently assessed. The reported state control does not establish those device-level performance measures.
Our engineering reading
In our interpretation, independently addressing two elements creates more control states than a single modulation channel. Practical optical components would need the additional electrical and reliability requirements quantified.
