What the study reports
A beam splitter and retroreflector on opposite sides of a metasurface exploit nonlocal coupling through fluid–solid interaction. The authors identify a projected coherent-perfect-absorption exceptional point in one spatial subspace and experimentally demonstrate activation or suppression of a coupling channel, enabling anomalous deflection or total reflection. [1]
What this does not establish
Abstract-level assessment. A projected absorption state concerns a specified scattering subspace and coherent input configuration; it does not imply perfect absorption for arbitrary incoming sound. Full geometry, bandwidth, dissipation and measurement uncertainty were not evaluated.
Our engineering reading
Our interpretation is that fluid loading can be a deliberate coupling mechanism for underwater wave devices. Robust scattering behavior and microscopic exceptional-point sensitivity describe different aspects of the system.
