What the study reports
An asymmetric lithium niobate nanowire array uses high-quality optical resonances to enhance electro-optical modulation. The reported response has a bandwidth of about 800 MHz at −3 dB and 1.4 GHz at −6 dB. The study also demonstrates electrical modulation of second-harmonic intensity. [1]
What this does not establish
The two bandwidth figures use different response thresholds; they are not interchangeable. A narrow resonant device does not establish broadband operation or general superiority to commercial modulators.
Our engineering reading
This is a route to electrically reconfigurable flat optics. System comparisons should include operating wavelength, optical loss, drive requirements and fabrication tolerance.
